Emotions and Oils: A Primer
Tell me about your emotions right now. What would you say if I told you I could teach you to lean into a higher state of emotion? I have a couple of tactics to share if you are needing to elevate your emotional state: checking in with your emotions and anchoring emotional shifts with essential oils.
Let’s start with a quick reminder to check in with yourself to assess your emotional state of being. If you’re feeling awesome, well then…awesome! If you are feeling discouraged or some other type of negative emotion, ask yourself where the emotion is coming from. One very important component of overall well being is the acknowledgement of our spiritual selves. We were created to know, love and serve God in this life and to be happy with him forever in heaven (Baltimore Catechism) No.1) . God has placed holy desires within us. We may have just buried them under years of seeking for fulfillment in all the wrong places. Our desire to seek Him becomes misguided. This improper, misplaced seeking is what has wounded us. Understanding the discernment of spirits is the first step in raising your awareness about your feelings. Getting clear in your mind about tactics the enemy uses to unsettle our peace is essential. In some cases, getting clear about the fact that there is even an enemy at all is critical if we ever hope to win in this battlefield of the mind. In part one of The Catechism of the Catholic Church , section 395 teaches that while Satan cannot prevent the building up of God’s reign, he can still wander the world seeking the ruin of souls and cause great spiritual and emotional injury. The fallen angels were created for good by God, but by their own doing, fell from grace. This free choice to reject God plays out repeatedly over time, with the father of lies creating doubt, discouragement and despair in the thoughts of every human being since the beginning of time. See how satan attempts this in your own life through the following negative emotions.
You’re feeling:
Rushed
Overwhelmed
Abandoned
Alienated
Angry
Anxious
Bitter
Burned Out
Confused
Chaotic
Comparison
Despair
Discouragement
Fear
Frustration
Greed
Guilt
Jealousy
Misunderstood
Obsessive
Rebellious
Rage
Rejected
Chances are a negative spirit is at work undermining your emotional balance. Stealthy as he is, you’ve likely never realized the true root of all negativity, nor the scope and sequence of this form of evil working in your life to keep you from your true purpose and fulfillment.
Satan rushes, overwhelms, alienates, condemns, obsesses, frustrates, causes anxiety, confusion, guilt, doubt, despair, despondence, misunderstandings, division, rebellion, and rejection.
On the other hand,
God consoles, instills patience, never pushes, invites, comforts, eases, clarifies, calms, loves, accepts, forgives, embraces, showers mercy.
Call each emotion into question and hold it up to the following truth: is this a lie of satan I believe or a biblical truth?
”We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. -Corinthians 10:3-5
This is the first step. Take every thought captive.
In other words, find a biblical truth to counter this negative thought-based emotion you are feeling in this moment.
Your next defense against the negative spirit within you affecting your emotions, is to harness the pure plant wisdom of essential oils as you anchor in your power to shift out of the negative and into the positive. How does this work?
Essential oils support emotional healing. Our bodies seek homeostasis. When all systems are functioning at their peak, underlying emotions that you’ve been suppressing become very uncomfortable and the body seeks release them in order to stay in balance. The interesting thing here is that the more oils are incorporated into your self-care, the more balance is restored. But ironically, your emotions may start feeling worse before getting better. This is a necessary part of the healing process. You’re going to feel very uncomfortable and this is because the oils are working. We must acknowledge these difficult feelings before we can release them, and we must release the negativity before we can heal. There is no skipping this step. Emotions that stay stuck may lead to longstanding beliefs that become deeply rooted within our subconscious and affect the way we perceive ourselves. The danger here are limiting beliefs that hold us back by reinforcing negative emotional pathways in the brain. Once we identify and release, we can replace the negative with positive, life-giving beliefs that lead to our flourishing. The love that is offered to us at our creation, is the love that will sustain us and help us to feel complete. God is the Great Physician. I’ve experienced miracles in my own healing simply by placing myself before God and asking for His healing. I always anchored my prayer with oils like rose and frankincense. It’s important to note, however, that this is a process. It took you years to get to this place. Oils will not magically make your negativity disappear. They will however, elevate your state, and this in turn will incite small shifts. You will know the oils are working when you go through a painful healing crisis whereby the negative emotions are rising to the surface to be purged. Your mind, body, and spirit are expelling deep buried emotions that have been at the root of your pain. You will begin to notice you are no longer operating from a place of fear. This is the point at which you are ready and open to receive positive feelings. You simply have to surrender to the process, because resistance prolongs and intensifies pain. Remember, God wants you to be whole. We have to take ownership of our healing. We have to acknowledge the pain and be willing to let go of these core feelings that we’ve become so accustomed to living with. This usually happens when we reach a pain point that we are no longer willing to tolerate. I encourage you to root out any negativity before it takes hold. The way to do this is to support emotional work with essential oils. An oil like Spikenard, the oil of gratitude, powerfully assists emotional cleansing by invoking a feeling of expansiveness, which is conducive to the letting go of resistance, past ingratitude, anger, or blame. This is a good oil to target victim mentality. Once these ruts have been excavated, a good companion oil to pave over the negative pathways of the past is wild orange, the oil of abundance. Wild orange supports positivity by inspiring fun, creativity, and a playful spirit. Wild orange feels like an invitation to relax, to trust in God’s abundance, and to be free like a child whose Heavenly Father provides for her every need.
Different oils have unique properties to support holistic healing. Essential oils high in limonene, for example, are cleansing. These citrus oils are especially helpful for individuals who’ve been burdened by grief, or have experienced an accumulation of negative emotions due to avoiding or repressing feelings. Oils high in linalool, like lavender and magnolia are calming, promote self-awareness and can aid in both releasing as well as self-expression connected to the authentic soul of a person. Oils for trauma contain constituents like alpha-pinene, which is both grounding and helpful in advancing restoration in the body. An oil like Black Spruce is stabilizing. If an experience has splintered your emotions and left you feeling disconnected, over-striving, and exhausted, you will find Black Spruce helps balance these emotions, especially when dealing with fear.
